Guests to the gallery were invited to type at a table with two manual typewriters.

As I am writing a thesis for my BFA: I placed all of my source material (books and printed articles on queer theory, architectural theory, identity and capitalist philosophy) allowing anyone the option to flip though, copy, glance at titles etc.

There were two reasons I did this, but before introducing these reasons I must tell you that I am wondering if people do not always feel ready to claim there thought. My placement of an array of my thesis’ source information, allowing the viewer the option to read, skim or glance and respond, was a way to study people’s reaction to space. More importantly it was to examine the mentality one holds over oneself when in a certain space. This of course is simply a study and by no means a finished project or line of thought. The reasons were:

1. The use of supplying text was to suggest information - to allow others to, in a way, contribute writings to my thesis and in doing so, I appropriated their reaction to the act of typing, or so I am thinking.

2. I wanted to encourage the viewer to imagine their own collection of writing - books at home on the shelf, the magazines in the bathroom, textbooks from writing papers, etc -this, I am inclined to think caused an enactment of self-opinion or the identity we attribute to ourselves when we are telling someone something. For example, one finished typed paper I collected was a list of advice - amazing.

notice the red traffic light at the left side of the video - random luck. i don’t know why red would be picked up but not yellow or green. interesting though.

Step forward: we hear
That you are a good man.

You cannot be bought, but the lightning
Which strikes the house, also
Cannot be bought.
You hold to what you said.
But what did you say?
You are honest, you say your opinion.
Which opinion?
You are brave.
Against whom?
You are wise.
For whom?
You do not consider your personal advantages.
Whose advantages do you consider then?
You are a good friend.
Are you also a good friend of the good people?

Hear us then: we know.
You are our enemy. This is why we shall
Now put you in front of a wall. But in consideration
of your merits and good qualities
We shall put you in front of a good wall and shoot you
With a good bullet from a good gun and bury you
With a good shovel in the good earth.

The Interrogation of the Good – Bertolt Brecht
